Purses (ladies’ handbags)

Purse is a mystery no less than the Bermuda triangle. Although the first bags appeared as long ago as the money that was carried in them, – a purse got its today’s form only in the late 19th century: when a woman began to realize her freedom from men. Modern bag is the creation of the French revolution of the 18th century and women's emancipation era of the late 19th century.

Functionally and aesthetically bags and purses have gone through the division of labour period: bags for work and exercise, cocktail and evening purses, funeral purse. Each time period tried to create its own style for this object. The locks appeared in the 19th century, and the zipper was invented in 1923.

Handbag is a body supplement, cult object and intimate woman’s space. Some psychologists find erotic overtones in this item: like its mistress, it closes with a lock and hides secrets. Perhaps this is one of the reasons of such a modest household item’s attraction.
